Design
At first glance, the Tecno Phantom V Flip has been meticulously crafted to meet flagship standards. This device folds in half along a hinge in the middle, which is designed to withstand repeated folding and unfolding.

Tecno has developed a thin steel hinge that can withstand over 200,000 cycles of folding, ensuring a gap-free fold and support for semi-folded states between 30° to 150°. However, it doesn’t allow the phone to open completely flat, which leads to a noticeable crease on the internal foldable screen. This crease, while not a major issue, can be felt, which may raise some concerns.

The Phantom V Flip’s exterior features dual rear panels covered in vegan leather, an aluminum frame, and a sturdy steel hinge. The internal screen is protected by a thin plastic film and is framed by a noticeable plastic bezel, similar to the Galaxy Z Flip’s design.

The 1.32 inches “Planet Cover Screen,” as Tecno calls it, is a unique and eye-catching feature. This round screen, surrounded by cameras, mimics a star and its orbiting planets, creating an aesthetically pleasing and fitting design element.

Meanwhile this device measures 171.7 x 74.1 x 7 mm when unfolded and 88.8 x 74.1 x 15 mm when folded. It weighs 194 grams, which is thinner than most smartphones even though it has a large size and foldable design which makes it easy to handle.

The foldable screen is covered with a protective film that shouldn’t be removed to ensure the screen’s safety. When opened, the device has a 6.9 inches display and a punch-hole at the center top to hold the front facing camera.

Meanwhile, the top of this phone features a microphone, while the bottom houses the primary microphone, USB-C port, and one of the speakers. The dual-SIM card tray is also located on the left side, and the power/lock keys and volume buttons are situated on the right side, with the power key doubling as a fast and accurate fingerprint scanner.

Display
The Tecno Phantom V Flip features a stunning foldable LTPO AMOLED display that redefines your visual experience. Unfolded, it spans 6.9 inches, offering a high-resolution view at 2640 x 1080 pixels. With an aspect ratio of 22:9 and a pixel density of 426 pixels per inch, every detail on this expansive screen is crisp and vivid.

What sets this display apart is its dynamic 120Hz refresh rate, ensuring silky-smooth animations and responsive touch interactions. The touch sampling rate of 360Hz further elevates the responsiveness, making tasks like gaming and scrolling incredibly fluid.

In terms of brightness, the Tecno Phantom V Flip doesn’t disappoint. With a peak brightness of 1,000 nits, it’s well-equipped to handle most lighting conditions. Additionally, it offers a High Brightness Mode (HBM), boosting the maximum brightness to 818 nits when needed for improved visibility in bright outdoor settings.

Thanks to LTPO technology, the display excels in power efficiency, ensuring that the large screen and high refresh rate won’t drain your battery too quickly. AMOLED technology, on the other hand, brings deep blacks, high contrast ratios, and vibrant colors to the forefront, enhancing your viewing pleasure.

Even when folded, this device doesn’t compromise on display quality. The cover screen measures 1.32 inches and boasts an AMOLED panel with a resolution of 466 x 466 pixels, offering a pixel density of 352 pixels per inch. While it may be small, it still supports a brightness of 800 nits in High Brightness Mode (HBM) and can peak at 818 nits for convenient use in various lighting conditions.

Camera
The Tecno Phantom V Flip has two cameras at the back and one inside the punch hole on the foldable screen. The primary rear camera boasts a 64MP Samsung ISOCELL GWB sensor, known for its reliability in producing quality images. This sensor features an optical format of 1/1.73″, 0.8µm pixel size, and a Tetrapixel color filter array (Quad Bayer) with an RGBW twist. The lens has an aperture of f/1.7, allowing for excellent low-light performance.

Furthermore, there is the complementing ultrawide camera that utilizes a Samsung (S5K)3L6 13MP sensor with a 1/3″ optical format and 1.12µm pixel size. It features a conventional RGB filter array and a fixed-focus lens with an f/2.2 aperture. The ability to autofocus adds versatility to capturing wide-angle shots.

Meanwhile, the front-facing selfie camera is a Samsung (S5K)GD2 32MP sensor with a 1/2.8″ optical format and 0.8µm pixel size. Similar to the rear primary camera, it utilizes a Tetrapixel filter to enhance image quality. The lens has an aperture of f/2.5, providing clarity in your self-portraits.

The Tecno Phantom V Flip rear camera supports video recording at up to 4K30 resolution using h.264 encoding. Meanwhile, selfie video recording capacity is up to 1440p@30fps and an option of 1080p@30/60fps. While video stabilization is generally satisfactory, it may have limitations in challenging scenarios.

Hardware and Software
On the inside, the Tecno Phantom V Flip is powered by the Mediatek Dimensity 8050, a high-end foldable chipset, offering fantastic performance. The CPU’s Cortex-A78 prime core is clocked at 3.0GHz, providing snappy responsiveness and seamless multitasking.

The chipset is backed up by Mali-G77 MC9 GPU and has up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage. Therefore, the android phone handles multiple tasks, 4K video streaming, and demanding gaming without any slowdowns.

On the software side, the Phantom V Flip runs on HIOS 13.5 based on Android 13.  This OS offers a user friendly interface, software updates and security patches, which is a most welcome development.
